Mobility: The first PAR5PT pillar
PAR5PT stands for "Performance And Recovery" based on five key concepts of physical therapy: Mobility, Stability, Balance, Coordination, and Manual Therapy. These concepts are fundamental in designing and implementing effective physical therapy programs aimed at improving patient outcomes.
The first concept is MOBILITY.
This refers to the ability of a joint to move through its full range of motion, and includes tissue extensibility, flexibility, and range of motion.
Mobility is a cornerstone of physical health and functionality. It refers to the ability of a joint to move freely through its full range of motion without restriction. Improved mobility can alleviate stiffness, reduce pain, and enhance overall physical performance.
Effective mobility training can include:
Dynamic stretching: Involves moving parts of your body and gradually increasing reach, speed of movement, or both.
Static stretching: Holding a stretch for a set period to relax muscles, lengthen muscles, and improve flexibility.
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) Stretching: Involves a combination of passive stretching and isometric contractions. An example is the hold-relax technique, where a muscle is stretched, contracted without movement, and then stretched again.
Soft tissue mobilization: Using a foam roller, massage gun, or other implement to release muscle tightness or trigger points and improve the movement of sliding surfaces in tissue.
Joint mobilization: Techniques used by physical therapists to improve joint function and reduce pain.
Mobility Drills: Includes exercises like hip circles, thoracic rotations, and ankle mobility drills that mimic functional activities.
Several factors can influence an individual's mobility, including:
Age: As we age, our joints and muscles naturally become less flexible.
Inactivity: Sedentary lifestyles can lead to tight muscles and reduced joint range of motion.
Injury: Injuries can cause scar tissue and adhesions, limiting mobility.
Posture: Poor posture can lead to muscle imbalances and restricted joint movement.
Chronic conditions: Conditions like arthritis can reduce joint mobility.
Without mobility, we cannot move well, and without moving well, we invite pain or injury. In the PAR5PT framework, mobility is not addressed in isolation. It is integrated into a broader plan that includes stability, balance, coordination, and manual therapy. This comprehensive approach ensures that improved mobility translates into better overall function and performance.
